This classic kitchen design is beautifully updated with Cabinets by Kemper Echo in cabinet style Leyton Maple upper cabinet color in White and lower cabinets in Cloud (5 piece drawer fronts).  They are accented by a beautiful mosaic tile backsplash and stainless kitchen appliances with a stainless wall mounted hood.

The biggest issue with this kitchen was it just wasn’t an inspiring place to hang out.

Kitchen Obstacles

The space included some unique challenges including raidant heat in the ceiling that warmed the kitchen that prevented recessed lighting and not an easy way to get additional square footage into the kitchen. The homeowners ended up moving the basement stairs to gain extra square feet required to fit the kitchen of their dreams. Even with extra space from moving the stairs, Michaela still had to create custom sized cabinets for the island to ensure there was enough room for seating while still being able to access the refrigerator.

After:  Custom trim, designed by Michaela,  makes the cabinets look taller.

Planning the kitchen space

The homeowners wanted to ensure there was a good working triangle and everything was easily accessible when needed. Michaela designed designated spaces within the kitchen- from a good working triangle, to a designated space for cookbooks within the kitchen, to a ‘drop zone’ at the back with the coffee for the inevitable collecting of ‘stuff’ that happens in a kitchen.

Bathroom Remodel

Designer Michaela puts a modern twist on a traditional bathroom.  Transforming a bathroom from dingy and dated to sparkling and stylish doesn’t require a lot of square footage.   This beautiful bathroom combines modern luxury with a traditional style — contrasting clean, contemporary textures with marble patterns to great effect. The vanity unit in black, finished with a sleek quart countertop.

The primary design objectives in this remodel was to add more storage space for two active cooks.  The original kitchen felt very small and there wasn’t enough room for a breakfast nook or an island.  Capitol designer Michaela’s solution was to redesign the kitchen with maximized function and storage while using light colors, traditional details, and clean lines.

White, in a kitchen or bath, is as popular as ever. The clients chose this Kemper Herrington raised door cabinet doors.  The furniture-like arch door shape creates a classic, traditional look. The finish in Coconut is a milky off-white that provides a clean, neutral look.

The clients love to cook, so Michaela added two places to store pots and pans. One place is under the microwave in a deep bottom drawer for smaller pots and pans. Another place was in the two-deep drawer base cabinet for big stock pots and large saute pans

Kitchen Problem Areas to Fix

• Minimal work space on the counters
• Lack of storage – especially for kitchen appliances
• Garbage can is out in the middle of the kitchen
• Cabinets are broken and don’t work well
• Only in-kitchen seating is at the stove
• Pantry cabinet door opens into the exterior door – they collide often and can’t both be open at the same time
• Facuet is hard to clean
• No place for a wine refrigerator
• No Drop zone (book bags, mail, etc) but kitchen is a high traffic area – items are left on the kitchen counters and floors.
• Plumbing for upper floors runs through the kitchen walls but is not flush creating a pillar in the kitchen.
• Load bearing walls are restricting ability to open up the kitchen.
