Family Gatherings A New Kitchen

The Gathering Place for Making Memories

With the holidays on the horizon, homeowners Mary and Tom Horgan started to make plans for family gatherings and opening their home to celebrate the season together. They had a relatively small kitchen compared to the size of the rest of the home. But they viewed the kitchen as the central gathering place for guests. They wanted to make space feel larger and have better storage.

Adrienne updated the existing space to maximize storage. With contractor Eric Petroski, they opened up the pass-through into the living room — shifted the faucet to the side to make for a more usable serving counter and extended the overhang on the peninsula for more working space as well as seating.

The cabinet style and finish were selected to coordinate with a hutch that is opposite the kitchen.

Deigner Touch

The homeowners wanted to extend the cabinets to the ceiling but there was a plumbing drain line that we could not relocate. Adrienne came up with a way to box in the plumbing and customize the cabinets on site in order to have taller cabinets. She came up with a wood crown soffit and tied everything together with some custom made floating wood shelves.

These clients had seen Capitol designer Adrienne’s other projects online and loved them. They knew she would be the perfect person to help them design their white farmhouse inspired dream kitchen.

Joanne is very excited to show off her new kitchen and is looking forward to her next large family gathering.

The dark cabinets and wallpapered walls in the before kitchen make the space feel smaller and keep it from reaching its full potential. The peninsula restricted traffic flow and couldn’t accommodate large family holiday gatherings. The floor was tile and wood and really broke up the space. The wall oven was right next to the garage entrance which restricted the flow of traffic.

Now, this kitchen feels far larger, even with a center island.

Storage Solutions – There are lots of ways you can increase storage or workable room in your kitchen. In this kitchen, Adrienne incorporated a double garbage, lazy susan, 12″ spice pantry pullout, floating shelves, and wood tiered cutlery divider to help keep things organized.

Right: Joanne knew she wanted a contrasting wood hood, so Adrienne matched the island and some floating shelves to tie the wood color throughout the kitchen.

The edge on the island gives it a more furniture-like look and differentiates it from the main kitchen.

Capitol is extremely proud and excited for our design team. At the annual National Kitchen & Bath Association (NBKA) Tri-State Design Competition, Capitol designers Lacey Fisher & Diane Staalesen both took home awards. The NKBA Tri-State Design Competition awards the top 2 kitchens in small and large size both Traditional and Contemporary and top 2 baths in small and large sizes in both Traditional and Contemporary designed within the last year. The awards are based on various criteria including the floor plan, the design statement, the client/homeowner needs and wants, addressing problems affecting the design, visual appeal or ‘WOW’ factor, and more. Lacey Fisher’s design won 1st place for the Large Kitchen- Traditional category. Lacey’s kitchen also took home the awards competition grand prize of ‘Best of the Best’! Diane Staalesen won 2nd place for the Small Bathroom- Traditional category. We’re very proud of our entire design team and excited to share the award winning kitchen designed by Lacey and the award winning bath designed by Diane below.

Authentic Flush Ends are available on most cabinets where the look of a working door on the end is desired. The fixed door panel is applied to a finished flush end.

Before: The kitchen was dark and cramped.

The clients wanted to remove the soffit and relocate the range to make a more efficient layout. They loved the idea of a decorative hood and wanted to center design around that.

Designer Feature: Opt for taller-than-standard upper cabinets, which raise your eye level and make the ceiling feel higher.

Replacing solid cabinet doors with glass-front doors can add visual depth, tricking the eye into thinking the kitchen is more spacious than it really is.

Transforming Carol’s Townhouse Master Bathroom into a Spa-Like Retreat

Carol’s townhouse master bathroom felt dark and small despite its tall ceilings. Poor lighting and a cramped layout limited the space’s potential, and Carol wanted a fresh, inspiring upgrade. Capitol Kitchens and Baths designer Adrienne stepped in with a vision to create a modern, spa-like bathroom transformation that added elegance and functionality to Carol’s home.

Key Features of This Master Bathroom Remodel

Enhanced Lighting for a Bright, Airy Feel
One of the main issues with Carol’s original bathroom was its inadequate lighting. Adrienne added sconces directly through the mirror, maximizing light distribution and making the space feel larger and more welcoming. This strategic lighting choice not only improves the room’s function but also enhances its aesthetics, creating a modern bathroom design that’s both stylish and practical.
Replacing the Tub with a Large, Walk-In Shower
The small, outdated fiberglass shower tucked in the corner wasn’t doing the space any favors. By removing the bathtub and installing a larger, luxurious shower in its place, Adrienne created a central feature that added a modern touch and spa-like atmosphere. For homeowners with a small master bathroom, replacing the tub with a walk-in shower is a great way to make the most of the space.

3. 3D Renderings for a Clear Vision
Adrienne’s 3D rendering of the remodel allowed Carol to visualize the final layout before any construction began. This 3D rendering technology helps clients make informed decisions on everything from layout to materials, ensuring a result that meets their expectations

Despite tall ceilings, poor lighting made the room feel small and dark. Adrienne added the sconces through the mirror to maximize light and give it an airy feel. The shower was a small fiberglass unit tucked into the corner. We removed the tub and put the large shower in its place.

Designer Tip: The details make the difference

In a small space like a bathroom, every detail matters: The right wall color, tilework or lighting can transform a dull, dated bathroom into a bright, stylish retreat.

Recommended Design Tips:

Use Mirrors to Reflect Light: Adding sconces through the mirror can double the light source and make a small bathroom feel more spacious.
Choose Neutral, Light Colors: Light wall colors, combined with natural materials like tile and stone, can make a small master bathroom feel open and airy.
Incorporate Hidden Storage: Built-in shelving or cabinetry keeps the bathroom organized and clutter-free, making it feel larger.

In the space previously occupied by the shower, Adrienne added two tall linen cabinets for towels and toiletry storage. Because the original fiberglass shower unit was deeper than the linen cabinets, we pulled them forward and added more tall storage on the side of the room by the entry door. This allowed us to utilize what would have been dead space in that empty wall cavity. Now she has room for her robe and hamper!

Project: Kitchen renovation Designer: Adrienne Cabinetry: Kemper Dutton | white paint Design Goal: Create an open space that is unique, relaxing and functional.

Capitol designer Adrienne worked with the homeowner to create an open space where family and friends could gather comfortably. There was an obstructive wall located directly in the middle of the original kitchen that kept this space fully separate from the rest of the living and dining area. By uniting the kitchen and dining room, they created a wide open space for everyone to gather. Working with Kemper kitchen cabinets, the client chose a Shaker-style cabinet in white, which feels fresh and clean. The granite peninsula adds seating and opens up into the new dining area.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: From Traditional to Transitional

Capitol designer Adrienne worked with homeowners Greg and Freya to update this otherwise dark and inefficient kitchen to the beautiful transitional kitchen it is today. They started by eliminating an oddly placed door, opened up the wall to the dining room and added a large window and reconfigured the space. Storage was very important to the couple and they meticulously planned each cabinet to maximize storage. Working with Woodland kitchen cabinets, the client chose a Shaker-style cabinet in Lace, which feels fresh and clean. The home now reflects a space that’s perfect for entertaining and relaxing, where each and every detail has been carefully selected to reflect the personal style but also the lifestyle of the people who live there.

We worked with Adrienne at Capitol Kitchens and Baths on our kitchen renovation, and it was an absolute pleasure, start to finish. Adrienne was patient with us while working through several iterations of our kitchen design. She has a great eye and struck a good balance between letting us make decisions and chiming in when we needed guidance. The showroom itself has a good variety of cabinets, counters, and hardware, and they were helpful in providing referrals for any items they didn’t carry. We are thrilled with our new kitchen.

The open layout of this Clifton Park home makes this maple kitchen the focal point. This transitional kitchen design exudes calm with smart storage and a clean look. WILTON KITCHEN REMODEL

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The goal of the redesign of this Wilton, NY kitchen was to maximize the availability of natural, light, create an open space that felt light and airy, and to offer plenty of storage and functional space. Says homeowner, Mary Lou, “It’s amazing how much bigger and brighter it looks.” and that’s exactly what my #CapitolKB designer, Adrienne gave me.

The biggest change in this kitchen was with the placement of the refridgerator. #CapitolKB designer Adrienne got creative and had the contractor build a false wall to enclose the refridgerator and round out the corner.

The homeowner decided to go with a full access Woodland Easton Cabinet in Lace, which beautifully brightens the new, skillfully designed layout. Well chosen details, including the pale gray subway tile, beautifully veined granite counter tops, and tailored range hood add just the right amount of balance and visual interest without overpowering. Adrienne included storage options both high and low, ensuring there is a place for everything. A double oven wall and deep wide drawers conveniently store food items, cookware and more. Cabinets and trim installed to ceiling height add to the light and airy feeling of the space.

Bringing new life to an old family home.

This 1800’s farmhouse had been in the family for years and the kitchen was just one part of a much larger whole home renovation. Since the family had grown up in this house, maintaining the character and charm was as important as updating the space. Take a look at the result of the beautiful remodel by #CapitolKB designer Adrienne. The farmhouse details, charming collectibles, and an open floor plan make for a bright and breezy kitchen that invites friends and family to stay and chat. Adrienne cleverly reworked the layout, adding fresh details (butcher block, open shelving, and new appliances) and restoring original features (hardwood floors) to their former glory. Wendy, the client is a collector so having adequate storage as well as display space was very important to her. The cherry bookcase style accent cabinets gave her the display space she needed. The spacious island offers prep space as well as a central gathering spot for the homeowners’ large family. The island’s cherry counter top not only stands up to daily wear and tear, but it also mimics an antique farmhouse table.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: JENNIFER GARGANO INTERIORS

Anyone thinking of a new kitchen or bathroom renovation needs to consider the importance of design. We interviewed Jennifer Gargano (@jennifergarganointeriors), who has been designing for over 10 years to pick her brain on tips for the design process and working with #Capitolkb designer Adrienne Petroski.

Jennifer is a graduate of California State University, Northridge where she studied Interior Design. After graduating, she moved to Deleware and started her career with a high end residential firm where she was exposed to all types of projects ranging from custom window treatments, furniture and full kitchen design. It was here she learned that it’s the details that count. “When I first started designing kitchens, I just focused on the cabinets, countertops, and appliances.” Today, I see that the other aspects of kitchen design – the space planning, lighting and how the kitchen design incorporates into the rest of the home’s interiors are just as important as the appliances and cabinets.”

Be passionate about what you do. People can tell when you really love what you do.

Jennifer explains her approach to working with a new client:

I’ll meet with the client and access their needs: do they cook alone, with their family or even at all? Then once I have an understanding I’ll inventory what they already have, I had one client who had every kitchen gadget and type of pan imaginable so I assess the best function to work through the kitchen with that in mind. I don’t insert my style into the project. When I meet with them I’ll look at how they dress what they do, look at the rest of their house. Some people have already been to Pintrest and know exactly what they want and others have no idea. After talking with them and figuring out their personality I have a better idea which direction to go. I still try to make it personalized for them by adding specific details unique to their lifestyle. I always listen to my client’s wishes because they really know what they want. you don’t want them to look back in 5 years and say “I wish I had more storage” or “the kitchen flow just doesn’t work”.

At that point, Adrienne and I will meet and fully plan out the project. We sit together with the measurements and start working through the floorplan. That’s where Adrienne is super helpful. Her knowledge of cabinet lines and other things like fixtures far exceeds mine. She’ll say that cabinet won’t work here or highlight special features a line of cabinets might have that would be best for the client and the space.

I love working with designers, especially Jennifer. She has such a great feel of what the customer is looking for as an overall feel and express that so well to me. My job becomes easy specifying which cabinet line or countertop materials and features will work best to accomplish the goal Jennifer has created with her clients.

Mid-Century modern

family bathroom

This house was a mid-century modern so they were ok with being a little more funky. The clients were a young family and only had one bathroom in the whole house. They didn’t have room to expand so that wasn’t an option. They have 2 young boys that are getting a little older and starting to be aware of their privacy. It was a big old bathroom that was really dark and damp with a tiny stall shower that was hard to get in and out of. Then there was a little tub that never worked and the toilet was in a space off to the back of the room. There was a big long vanity but only had one sink which wasn’t suitable for a family of four. To top it off, the entire bathroom was in black and mint green tile.

The solution

he first thing we wanted to do was lighten it up. We gutted the whole room and added a pocket door to enclose the toilet. This opened up the room to accommodate multiple family members at any given time and still maintain some privacy. We used the Persuade Circ toilet with duel flush technology to add style to the bathroom without sacrificing water savings. We also added a transom window above the pocket door just to let more light into that space. For the vanity, we used beautiful cherry cabinets, in a flat panel with soft close doors and drawers. (Cabinet: Bertch Riverside Finish: Fawn) The faucets are the gorgeous Kohler Purist line in a Vibrant Brushed Bronz (see above). Kohler matches everything right down to the flush lever so it looks great. The finish is a little bit trendier now, but the cross handles are in a classic style so it all works and won’t seem dated in a few years. The bathroom is very serene, you want to be in there. I love designing small bathrooms because they are very efficient. You can do some amazing things with that limited amount of space.

When space is limited, it takes smart planning to create a multifunctional and aesthetically appealing kitchen. #CapitolKB designer Adrienne was able to add an enormous amount of storage space in this well-designed kitchen.

It’s amazing what a few smart touches can do. Structurally, this kitchen remains the same, but simple switches like swapping the dated cabinets and appliances really made the difference.

Gorgeous Countertop in this Kitchen Remodel

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Gorgeous Cambria Quartz Countertop in this Kitchen Remodel from Adrienne

The original kitchen in this suburban home was dark, outdated and traffic flow was cumbersome. Adrienne, our #CapitolKB designer, rearranged the existing foot print to fix this and a new gorgeous countertop became the focal point of this renovation.

To top off the design, custom tall pantry cabinets with glass-faced storage was designed to add extra storage and showcase the homeowner’s cookware.
