The Kitchen Remodel

Buying our house, we knew the kitchen would be a big project that would need to happen. In the new house, we felt we were upgrading that space a bit because the kitchen was open to other areas of the house… but we lost a full walk-in pantry with 9ft ceilings and lost some counter space our old house had. 

The plan was always to expand it but knew it would be a big undertaking and a high budget home remodeling project so we pushed it off for a bit.

IN HOME MEASURE & DESIGN CONSULTATION

This step was the most fun for me personally because it was the ‘we’re actually starting the remodel!’ moment. As I am in Capitol’s showrooms often and have previously designed kitchens, this is when we actually started putting pen to paper to design the Sullenger Kitchen!

This appointment was about an hour or so and we were able to show Andy what we had previously discussed. We expanded upon how we use our kitchen, our frustrations in our current kitchen, and our wants/desires in the new kitchen. 

In our kitchen remodel we are actually moving the kitchen to another part of the house so the visual was very important to assist with the design.

UPDATING THE DESIGN

Andy updated our design with our color choices. Initially we had discussed that to do all of the lower cabinets and island in the painted color it might be too much blue or green. But after seeing the design it was WAY to brown and because our kitchen is long- the blue was really only visible on one end of the island. 

 Andy updated the design to have all lower cabinets in blue and only uppers/tall cabinets in brown and as soon as I saw it- I knew that was my kitchen!

 The next step was to review our cabinets, ensure that the drawers vs cabinets were all what we wanted and to look at storage solutions to ensure we had any of those incorporated as well. 

 Because our kitchen is doubling in size and everything is moving- I had to spend time going through our current kitchen (and pantry, and closet, and basement) to see all the kitchen items we had and to account for where they would go. From here I could better see if we needed more or less drawers. I also looked at Woodland’s site and their storage options (https://woodlandcabinetry.com/explore-woodland-cabinetry-products/smart-organization/) to see what we would want to incorporate. 

 If you are not replacing your current kitchen with the exact same layout and cabinets- I strongly recommend doing what I did. Label where everything would go. This will make sure you have the storage and organization you need and nothing gets missed. We never want someone to finish their kitchen install and then be disappointed because it doesn’t function properly.

A Kitchen Remodel with style and function.

A small kitchen doesn’t have to mean you sacrifice style or function. A designer can help you be strategic with your decisions, and make great use of the space that works for your family.

Making a forever home 

Colors and textures are showcased in this artistic kitchen. An open space designed for a family who loves to cook and spend time together, the kitchen balances a sense of ease and comfort along with a bold style that’s unafraid to stand out.  Homeowners Eric and Jennifer purchased this home as their forever home and wanted the kitchen to work well for them long term.

The space got a modern upgrade with a focus on unique storage options that’s functional, comfortable, and looks good.  Homeowner Eric is very handy and did all of the carpentry work himself!

They gutted it to create a bright Scandinavian feeling kitchen with an L-shaped counter, white cabinets and counters, and a green subway tile backsplash to add some personality.

If there’s one room in your home that absolutely needs to be functional, it’s the kitchen. But since it’s the heart of the home, a kitchen should also be stylish and presentable.

The white cabinets look so much fresher than the former wood material in this kitchen.  Removing the soffit and using tall cabinets to the ceiling gives both more storage and a feeling of grandeur and height in a smaller space. Now, it has a beautiful color scheme of greens and blues, smart glass cabinet doors, new lighting, and a spacious counter for cooking and eating.

Kitchen Obstacles

The space included some unique challenges including raidant heat in the ceiling that warmed the kitchen that prevented recessed lighting and not an easy way to get additional square footage into the kitchen. The homeowners ended up moving the basement stairs to gain extra square feet required to fit the kitchen of their dreams. Even with extra space from moving the stairs, Michaela still had to create custom sized cabinets for the island to ensure there was enough room for seating while still being able to access the refrigerator.

Planning the kitchen space

The homeowners wanted to ensure there was a good working triangle and everything was easily accessible when needed. Michaela designed designated spaces within the kitchen- from a good working triangle, to a designated space for cookbooks within the kitchen, to a ‘drop zone’ at the back with the coffee for the inevitable collecting of ‘stuff’ that happens in a kitchen.

Designing Beauty with Function

When it comes to creating a new kitchen design, let your lifestyle and your home’s current configuration influence the shape of your new cabinetry. Are you an aspiring cook? Do you like to entertain? Is counter space a premium? These are just some of the considerations that will determine which kitchen design layout is right for you. And this is where the Kitchen Triangle Rule comes in handy.

Kitchen Work Triangle and Kitchen Design

What is a Kitchen Work Triangle?

The kitchen work triangle, also called the ‘kitchen triangle’ or the ‘kitchen golden triangle’,  has been the golden standard of kitchen design for many years now. By definition, the kitchen work triangle is a time-tested guideline observed in kitchen design to make efficient kitchen layouts with clear traffic lanes.

Basically, the concept behind it is that the three most used things in the kitchen, the sink, the refrigerator, and the stovetop, should be laid out in a triangle shape.

The main purpose of this rule is to ensure that your kitchen workspace is practical, comfortable and large enough – but not too large – so the kitchen workflow is always seamless.

Imagine cooking, cleaning, and reaching food storage areas with ease, cutting down wasted steps and giving you more time to do other activities.

Kitchen Work Zones and Kitchen Work Triangle

Before deciding on a kitchen layout, consider how you want these work zones to function together in your new space. In addition to work zones, you will also want to consider how you will use your new kitchen.

What three components make up the kitchen work triangle?

The triangle connects 3 main work areas within the kitchen – the range, the sink and the refrigerator. A general rule is that the distance between these three areas should be between 4 feet and 9 feet, no more and no less, with the sum of the three sides lying between 13 feet and 26 feet.

Again, the goal of applying this rule is to make your kitchen work zones efficient. The triangle kitchen layout should enable you to perform day-to-day tasks with relative ease and without obstruction.

Common Kitchen Work Triangle Zones and Layouts

Here are some of the most popular kitchen layouts (following the kitchen work triangle) you may consider when planning your kitchen design

1) SINGLE WALL / STRAIGHT KITCHEN LAYOUT

A single wall kitchen layout is great for small spaces.
With layout positions for all of the appliances on a single wall, this kitchen design would typically be found in a studio apartment or other very small space.

2) GALLEY KITCHEN LAYOUT

A galley kitchen design is open on both ends.
Open on both ends, the galley kitchen design requires a minimum corridor width of 48″ so the cook can easily maneuver during meal preparation. Kitchen appliances are typically laid out near one another, which can be convenient, but due to the corridor shape of the kitchen, all of the household traffic will pass though the space.

3) L-SHAPED KITCHEN WORK TRIANGLE

An L-shaped kitchen layout makes use of only two walls, providing open sensibility.
This kitchen layout offers flexibility for both large and small homes. It makes use of only two kitchen walls, providing an open sensibility. The L-shape minimizes traffic through the kitchen and, typically, features larger expanses of countertops, allowing ease of preparation at mealtime.

4) U-SHAPED KITCHEN LAYOUT

A U-shaped kitchen layout offers generous counter space and efficient work areas.
A popular choice because of its efficiency, the U-shaped kitchen offers generous counter space and work areas that are close together. It can, however, make the cook feel apart from a group when entertaining, as most tasks will be done while facing one of the three walls. To open the space up more, you could add a half wall or use only two walls with a peninsula island making up the third side.

5) L-SHAPED KITCHEN WORK TRIANGLE WITH ISLAND

Enhance an L-shaped kitchen design with an island.
With the addition of an island, an L-shaped kitchen design offers the added flexibility of providing a space where the cook can interact with others while prepping food, cooking, serving or cleaning up.

6) G-SHAPED KITCHEN LAYOUT

Featuring a modified U shape, the G-shaped kitchen layout is very efficient.
However, unless one or more of the walls are designed as half or “pony” walls, this kitchen shape can feel confining for today’s cook.

Many different kitchen layouts fit the kitchen work triangle concept. While it often applies to traditional U-shaped kitchens, many other layouts can work. For instance, a large, open-concept kitchen with an island can still retain the core triangular placement of the three main elements. An L-shaped kitchen can nicely accommodate the triangle concept as well. A galley that is closed off on one end can be a perfect example of the work triangle too.

The overall opinion of kitchen experts is that no, kitchen triangle is not yet dead. In fact, the kitchen triangle is a good design principle. It will always be popular since it has been the standard in the design industry. For the longest time, it has made many homeowners’ lives easier. While there are tons of sophisticated layouts you can follow today,  many designers still prefer the efficiency of movement a kitchen triangle can bring to mind when working up a new design.

But due to the changing needs of the modern family, one may opt to not strictly abide by the rule. In fact, some kitchen owners prefer having ‘working zones’ instead (like baking zone, serving zone, etc.), especially in larger kitchens.

At the end of the day, the kitchen work triangle is only a guideline.  Many designers today believe that the most important criterion for kitchen design is the client’s lifestyle.  As a homeowner, it’s important to choose a layout that works best for you and your needs. So before finalizing your decisions,  do your research — know the pros and cons of each kitchen layout.

Pro tip: when using existing flooring or wood trim, don’t try to match it, you can overwhelm the space making it overly monochromatic. Instead, try to draw out specific tones in the wood with complementing colors.

The primary design objectives in this remodel was to add more storage space for two active cooks.  The original kitchen felt very small and there wasn’t enough room for a breakfast nook or an island.  Capitol designer Michaela’s solution was to redesign the kitchen with maximized function and storage while using light colors, traditional details, and clean lines.

For this beautiful two-toned Saratoga Springs kitchen, the clients had already started the kitchen remodel before they contacted Capitol to help out.  “When I got involved, their kitchen was already torn out, they were without a contractor, and not sure what to do next,” explains Capitol Designer Lacey.  

The homeowners thought they were ready to order kitchen cabinets and keep their project moving quickly. However,  once they sat down for the initial design consultation, Lacey realized that they had not fully thought through how they would use the space. The cabinets they chose did not have a reasonable amount of drawers, and the kitchen did not provide enough storage for a busy family.

The layout didn’t drastically change from what the clients had originally planned, but the initial chosen style was much more of a rustic farmhouse look, which didn’t fit with the rest of the home. Using walnut cabinets on the island helped to complement the other wood tones used in the home without overpowering the space and still have a bit of the farmhouse look that the homeowner wanted.

Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinets

For the perimeter of the kitchen, we used Woodland Inset Summit cabinet doors in Lace. The Lace is a beautiful off white that doesn’t show too buttery or gray. It has a very neutral tone. The island and bar area, as well as the floating shelves, are in Woodland Inset Summit cabinet doors in Walnut Spice. The richness and natural beauty of the Walnut were an easy choice especially when stained the Spice color against their Hickory floors.

This previously outdated kitchen just wasn’t working for a family in Saratoga Springs, NY so we made a couple subtle design changes that made sense for the client’s lifestyle. First, we mixed cabinet styles, using both full overlay full access White Shaker Cabinets for the base and Traditional build inset wall cabinets. Giving the space a very classy and comfortable look.

Kitchen Problem Areas to Fix
